How Do You Motivate Yourself to Look for Work 2 Of the 5 times that I've had to look for a job, only once was I forced into that position as a result of someone else's (poor ?? ) decision making. That makes a big difference. If you choose to switch jobs or careers, you likely have a good reason for doing so and are optimistic about the future. However, if your term is ‘cut short', feelings of failure and regret come easily even if the end came under the guise of downsizing or outsourcing as in the case of my last employer. The sense of unfinished business and the lack of anticipation can weigh on your attitude as you begin the search for your next workplace, and those sentiments can be difficult to shake off but shake them off you must!eval I've known people who, after being unemployed for more than a year, still have not come to terms with their last ‘breakup'. Almost definitely not unrelated to their prolonged job search… How do you motivate yourself to look for work?eval What do you do to keep your spirits up during that upward climb? To blog or not to blog I am a big advocate of blogging to give yourself an advantage in your career, but, as Seth Godin says, you need to have candor, urgency, timeliness, pithiness, and controversy, (by way of Global PR Week.) In short, you need to have something to say that will interest other people. I believe that each person has interesting things to say, you just need to learn how to say them, which takes practice. This applies to both blog entries and job interview questions. Take, for example, the most ubiquitous question: So, tell me about yourself. To answer that question well you have to be a good storyteller. You have to sift through all the information you have to find the pieces of information that are interesting to your audience. The same is true for a blog. You need to learn how to be interesting. But you have to do it more regularly than you interview. If youre looking for encouragement, Claire Adler writes in the London Guardian, about people who have typed their way to the top. Adler shows wide range of routes to blogging success, (and, BTW, she quotes the Brazen Careerist blog, hooray.) On the other hand, The Flack gives a summary of the people who should not be blogging. Tucked inside that summary is a link to a New York Times article quoting Nick Denton, the man who made millions from blogging, saying for the millionth time that we are in a blogging bubble. Every time he says that I am encouraged because if theres a blogging bubble then theres still money to be made before it pops.

How to Retain Employees by Emphasizing BAM When psychologist Abraham Maslow explained his hierarchy of needs, there was no mention of the workplace. However, as humans, every employee is still subjected to the needs described by Maslow. We all need something more from our jobs. I recently sat down with entrepreneur and corporate culture expert Piyush Patel, author of Lead Your Tribe, Love Your Work, to discuss how companies can provide employees with what they need from their jobs. Patel explained there are five layers in the hierarchy. The bottom two are physical needs followed by safety and security. In the workplace, these two layers get fulfilled with a paycheck and job security. You can put food on the table, you have a roof over your head, and youre not afraid of losing the roof over your head any time soon. Only after providing those base layers, Patel explains, can you hope to provide your employees with the top three layers that he calls BAMâ€"belonging, affirmation and meaning. So, what does BAM look like? Belonging As humans, its natural for us to want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. Were hardwired to belong to groups. Since we spend a majority of our time in the workplace, we instinctively want to identify with those around us. A great way to create a sense of belonging in your company is by giving your people the opportunity for shared experiences. Build rituals for your tribe to help them form positive memories together. Perhaps thats through a weekly outing to a local pub or an annual retreat. The more shared experiences your tribe can build together, the stronger your tribes bond will be with each other. Affirmation Everyone likes to receive appreciation. Start by listeningâ€"really listenâ€"to what your employees have to say. Try repeating back what youve heard so they know you were listening and not just waiting for your turn to talk. Another approach is to find ways to offer specific appreciation about why your employees are doing a great job. Instead of the generic, Great job today! try, That was a tough customer, but I appreciate you staying professional. The more specific you can get, the more itll be obvious to your employees that youre taking the time to see the difference theyre making in the company. Meaning The pinnacle of Maslows hierarchy shows your employees theyre not just pushing buttons. Their work has meaning. One great way to provide meaning is to look for opportunities to clarify the bigger picture. Generic statements of how the company is helping customers can be great for external marketing, but internally you should get more detailed. Like affirmation, the more you can clarify each person or teams role in the bigger picture the better. Encourage your employees to share their own stories. A few examples: Two American Airlines mechanics didnt like having to toss out $200 drill bits once they got dull. So they rigged up some old machine parts a vacuum-cleaner belt and a motor from a science project and built Thumping Ralph. Its essentially a drill-bit sharpener that allows them to get more use out of each bit. The savings, according to the company: as much as $300,000 a year. And it was a group of pilots who realized that they could taxi just as safely with one engine as with two. That was instituted as policy has helped cut Americans fuel consumption even as prices have continued to rise to record levels.
